How Many Units Can Be Linked on One sACN Line?
There is no single universal maximum number of fixtures that can operate on an sACN network. However, there may be a fixture-specific limit or recommendation for how many units can be daisy-chained through the Ethernet IN/OUT ports.
These are two different considerations.
Ethernet Daisy-Chain Limit
When fixtures are connected Ethernet OUT to Ethernet IN from one fixture to the next, each fixture becomes another link in the network path. The recommended maximum number of fixtures in this type of chain depends on the specific fixture and its internal Ethernet hardware. Always check the product manual for any stated maximum or recommended Ethernet daisy-chain length.
For larger systems, use appropriate Ethernet switches to distribute the network rather than creating one very long fixture-to-fixture chain.
sACN Network Capacity
sACN can carry many DMX universes over a single Ethernet network. The practical capacity depends more on network design, bandwidth, switch configuration, multicast traffic, and the number of universes being transmitted than on the total number of fixtures.
What Determines Network Capacity
DMX Channels per Fixture
Each sACN universe carries up to 512 DMX channels. The number of fixtures that can share a universe depends on the DMX mode and channel footprint of each fixture.
Number of Universes
Multiple sACN universes can travel over the same Ethernet network. Larger systems should be designed with appropriate network infrastructure and distribution.
Network Switches and Multicast Configuration
sACN commonly uses multicast. On larger networks, switches that support features such as IGMP snooping can help manage multicast traffic efficiently. Incorrect network configuration can contribute to communication problems.
Network Traffic and Cabling
Poor-quality switches, excessive unrelated network traffic, damaged cables, or unreliable connections can cause packet loss, latency, or fixture communication problems.
IP Configuration
Devices must have compatible network settings and unique IP addresses where required. IP conflicts or incorrect subnet configuration can prevent fixtures from communicating properly.
Recommended Practice
Check the fixture's user manual for any stated Ethernet daisy-chain limit.
Determine the DMX channel footprint and number of universes required for the system.
For larger installations, distribute fixtures through appropriate Ethernet switches instead of relying on long fixture-to-fixture chains.
Use properly configured network hardware suitable for sACN/Art-Net traffic.
Follow the network and Ethernet recommendations provided for the specific fixture.
Important: Do not assume that because an sACN network has sufficient bandwidth, an unlimited number of fixtures can be connected in a single Ethernet daisy chain. The supported or recommended chain length may vary by fixture.
