What Should I Know Before Updating My Fixture's Firmware?
Before performing a firmware update, it is important to confirm that your fixture is operating properly and that you are using the correct firmware, uploader, and update procedure for your specific model.
1. Check the Fixture for Errors
Before beginning an update, confirm that the fixture is error-free and is not displaying any error messages or error codes.
If the fixture is reporting an error, the underlying issue should be diagnosed and corrected before attempting a firmware update. A firmware update should not be used as a troubleshooting method to correct hardware-related errors.
2. Confirm the Correct Firmware
Verify that the firmware file you are using is intended for your exact fixture model.
You should also confirm the fixture's current firmware version and review any available release notes or update instructions. Some updates may require a specific update sequence or intermediate firmware version.
3. Use the Correct Uploader and Procedure
Confirm that you are using the appropriate Elation uploader or update method specified for your fixture.
Always follow the update instructions provided for your specific model. Update procedures can vary between products, and using an incorrect uploader, file, or procedure may cause the update to fail.
4. Fully Charge the Uploader
If the update requires a battery-powered firmware uploader, make sure the uploader is fully charged before beginning the update.
Do not allow the uploader or fixture to lose power during the firmware update. An interrupted update may corrupt the fixture's firmware and could leave the fixture in a non-operational state.
5. Do Not Interrupt the Update
Once the firmware update has started, do not disconnect data cables, remove the uploader, or power off the fixture unless specifically instructed by the update procedure.
Allow the entire update process to complete before restarting or testing the fixture.
Need Assistance?
If you are unsure which firmware file, uploader, or procedure is correct for your fixture—or if you experience any problems during the update—please contact Elation Service & Support before proceeding.
Providing the fixture model, serial number, current firmware version, and the firmware version you are attempting to install will help our team assist you more efficiently.
I especially like including the line that firmware should not be used to correct hardware-related errors—that should help prevent customers from trying an update when a fixture already has a mechanical, PCB, sensor, or other hardware fault.
